light sun to part shade; moist, well-drained soil; complex star-shaped maroon flowers on a vining plant with pale green, heart-shaped leaves 2”-4” inches in length;  the vine dies back and returns every year; for woods edges; blooms June-July; zones 5-8.  W. Va. ecotype.
